Just for Laughs: Kathy Griffin to host final anglo gala

By Bill Brownstein, THE GAZETTE MONTREAL - The slot has been filled for the final Just for Laughs anglo gala, and it is going to another lady: the ever-acerbic Kathy Griffin will be at the helm of the 10 p.m. July 26 show at Place des Arts. If nothing else, the 31st edition of Just for Laughs could go down as the Year of the Funny Woman. Six of the 10 anglo galas are being hosted by women: apart from Griffin, the others are Sarah Silverman (who is doing two), Joan Rivers, Kristin Chenoweth and Whitney Cummings. Add in headliners like Amy Schumer, Kristen Schaal, Maria Bamford and Tig Notaro, and it becomes quite evident that in all its history, Just for Laughs has never had this significant a presence of women at the forefront. (Now the pressure is on the boys to deliver.) Griffin is another versatile talent. She can do it all on the comedy front: stand-up, improv, film, TV, records, books. A member of the groundbreaking improv troupe The Groundlings, Griffin first leapt into the limelight with a support role on the sitcom Suddenly Susan. Apart from her comedy specials, three discs (each resulting with a Grammy nomination) and frequent appearances on the late-night talk-show circuit, she really struck gold with her Bravo show, Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D-List, which ran from 2005 to 2010. The show netted her two Emmy Awards for Outstanding Reality Program, but it was her controversial acceptance speech in 2007 that drew even more attention: “Now, a lot of people come up here and thank Jesus for this award. I want you to know that no one had less to do with this award than Jesus. He didn’t help me a bit. If it was up to him, Cesar Millan would be up here with that damn dog. So all I can say is suck it, Jesus, this award is my God now!” Surprise: the speech didn’t go down well with some. But Griffin stated she was totally misunderstood, that all she intended was simply to make a tongue-in-cheek commentary on those performers who credit higher beings for their prizes. Griffin doesn’t hold back. One of the sharpest tongues in the business, Griffin — not unlike her buddy Bill Maher — can be counted on to take shots at all comers during her gala. Kathy Griffin hosts the 10 p.m., July 26 gala at Salle Wilfrid Pelletier of Place des Arts. For complete Just for Laughs listings and ticket information, visit hahaha.com.
